How to Get Featured on Top News Sites
Filed Under Best of 2008, Blogging, Networking and Marketing Strategy, News
When I set up my Online Social Networking blog in November 2007, I had essentially neither blogging nor search engine optimization experience.
I did have excellent reasons for starting a blog, and I was very determined to succeed. I was ready to learn and prepared to overcome any obstacles that might come my way.
Not wanting to write without readers, I reached out to my e-mail list and to my friends at social networking sites promoting my blog.
As time went on, the quality of my articles improved, I found new ways to connect with potential readers, and I received more and more visitors from search engines.
I must admit to you I’m not a natural writer. Each post to my blog takes hours of writing and editing. Nevertheless, I reached a point this summer when I felt ready to go in a new direction.
Syndicated by BlogBurst
I submitted my blog to BlogBurst and they accepted it for national syndication once they confirmed that it conformed to their editorial standards. The whole application process was really very simple.
BlogBurst refers member articles to top news agencies including Reuters and to a variety of other online publications.
When BlogBurst accepted me for membership they advised me to post at least one well written and carefully edited article of medium-length per week, something that I was already doing as part of my blogging strategy.
Picked Up by Reuters
Reuters has picked up four of my articles so far:
- Ning Social Networking Sites
- Ning Social Networking Sites Update
- Home Based Businesses Don’t Work
- How to Get Featured on Top News Sites (this post!)
I encourage you to read them on the Reuters site and then to click through to my blog in order to view the original posts and their comments. You can also subscribe to my RSS Feed or e-mail blogcast if you haven’t already done so.
I’m hoping that my recent post, Google Reverses Recent PageRank Update, will also make its way onto Reuters.
Also Featured by Chicago Sun Times
The Chicago Sun Times has picked up two of my articles so far:
Strategic Implication
What I’m looking for more than anything else through syndication is third party validation of my work. This validation enhances my credibility with my readers, i.e. you.
Since the Internet, especially the blogosphere, is cluttered with conflicting information and advice, you need to decide for yourself what you want to believe. Hence I appreciate this opportunity to enhance my credibility with you.
Don’t miss any posts. Subscribe to my RSS feed! You can even subscribe by e-mail.

Hi Larry,
I don’t know if I really qualify for BlogBurst or not. I am a first time author. I just have had my book published, and I am trying to find ways that I can get the word out about it.
I have joined many networking sites, but to actually draw people to my web page, it is difficult for me to know how to do that. I am nurse and writer, not a computer whiz and I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not understand all the terminology used.
I had an agent at one time, but she left me with no help, so I let her go. So now I am doing this on my own.
Like I have mentioned, I have joined many networking sites. I am in the porcess of getting reviews on my book, so I can put them on my web page.
How can I direct people to my web page so they will buy my book?
I have a press release and sales sheet and publishing company blog. But the rest is basically left up to me.
Although I have my own sites, that doesn’t mean that everyone is just going to happen to go to my networking site and read my splash page about a child’s book.
But I am sure that people just like you and me either have children or grandchildren who would enjoy this book.
Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Kindly
Linda
Well Linda, it sounds like you need a crash course in online promotion. Of course that’s not something I can fit into a comment on a blog.
The two main ways to get people to your site are social networking and search engines.
Building a list along the way is very important.
Once they’re at your site you need to direct them, so they know what they are required to do.
Do you want them to opt into your list? Do you want them to buy right away?
There has to be a call to action with a clear path for them to follow, something that doesn’t exist now on your present site.
Perhaps we ought to have a very brief phone discussion to discuss the situation. My phone number is on my about page.
Larry
Hey Larry,
I have to hand it to you! It’s a real accomplishment, and I congratulate you.
I considered BlogBurst as well, but as it stands my present blog doesn’t really provide me the opportunity to post larger articles.. at least not yet. Mine is an entirely different focus, but I’ll be looking for a way to be sure.
I can’t think of a better way to gain some mega juicy inbound links than just as you’ve done.
No question that creating those kinds of articles takes a lot of work, but I think you’ve proven quite well the value and rewards awaiting to those who put in the work.
Bravo! And keep up the great work!
Tim
Larry. Outrageously good! Way to go! I do enjoy your work and appreciate the time, energy and research which goes into producing something reader worthy and informative.
I personally find your articles insightful and filled with golden nuggets. I don’t always agree with you
but nevertheless, it’s always well written!
I will certainly stay connected. All the best my friend and congrats again.
Nadira
Hi Larry,
Yes nice idea I recently got accepted by Blog Burst too, much to my surprise.
Do they let you know if your blog gets picked up or not?
Sally
Just submitted my blog to BlogBurst.
My problem is that there’s no category for my blog. I’m all over the map, but I stuck it somewhere.
I’ll post a link to Blog Burst and your blog on my “passing this along blog”.
Thanks.
Hi Larry.
This was a great article. I am in the process of setting up a site on Ning called Sister Inc. TV.
I needed a central location for both my video and my blogs without having to pay my web designer again to re-design my site.
So once I commit to blogging every day to this site do you think I will be able to submit my Ning blog to BlogBurst?
Thanks
Audrey
Hi Larry!
It feels good to see the fruit of your labor, doesn’t it? To know you have something of value, share it with others and then have them see the value too is a more difficult accomplishment than one might think. Even more satisfying is when they pass your ideas along to others. How Great is that?!
Good Job Larry!
@Sally - Unfortunately you have to keep checking. You need to log into BlogBurst and click on “Post Placement”.
@Audrey - Maybe yes, maybe no. You can try.
I invite you to visit my Ning Social Networking Sites post and write a comment there all about your new site.
@Everybody Else - Thank you very very much!
That is fabulous information Larry and how awesome for you!!! I read all your blogs and am inspired everytime! Your dedication to content and the time you put into each article is obvious!
Thanks!
Blessings!
PAM
Yes, Larry …
Add me to your list of well wishers! I know you work hard and are very dedicated.
Nice Job with BlogBurst and Reuters!
Larry,
Congratulations on getting two of your posts syndicated.
I hadn’t even heard of BlogBurst, but I’ll check them out.
Warmly,
Linda P. Morton
Thanks. Great article.
Congratulations for being featured on the Reuters website!! it is a great opportunity for your site.
Hi Larry - congrats!!! It is awesome to see one’s work reach even more readers!
Thanks for the recommendation. The BlogBurst site looks most interesting and it is great to hear you have had success with them.
Congratulations, I want to be like you when I grow up.
I worked with several different sites, having other people publish my articles. That seemed good at first, I got traffic and life seemed good.
Then a print magazine got in touch with me and asked for me to write an article for them. Once published, it was easier to get people off-line to take me more seriously because someone actually killed trees for my article.
Great article.
@Dar - Growing up is overrated.
@Cindy - I’m a business analyst and coach. I haven’t thought much about being published. I am thrilled however, given that I’m somewhat of a geeky math genius type, that news sites would consider my business articles worth sharing with their readers. Thanks for your encouragement.
Larry
I’ve had 35 of my blog posts published on Reuters and the Chicago Sun-Times so far. It’s a nice ego boost but so far hasn’t generated any additional traffic for my blog. Even Blogburst admits the click-through rate (a “click-through” is when someone visits your blog by clicking on the link supplied with every published post) is only about 1 to 3 percent max. It’s still cool though.
Hey Larry, that’s awesome being picked up by Reuters and others…I believe you are on your way to being a blog superstar…good luck!
Wow Larry, that’s some really great syndication you have going there.
I think I’m going to sign up with BlogBurst too and see if they like my blog.
Wonderful article Larry! Hoping to be as good as you some day!
Hi Larry
I need PR for Australian Numerals which is a new free number system to replace the number system you use now.
So I’ll read your blog with interest.
Thanks!
Jonathan Crabtree
Wow. That’s quite a bit of information. I never knew that services like BlogBurst can get you to the top of media sites.
I have used another simpler way: Sphere.
Using this feature, you can just link to any media site that uses Sphere, and the article you link to may automatically feature you through its Sphere widget. Cool.
